there is ahope for rejected children, despite their ineptness. Stephen Asher, a University of Illionis psychologist, has designed the series of friendship coaching sessions for unpopular children that has shown some success. identifying third and fourth graders who were the least liked in their clashes Asher gave them six seseion inhow to make playing game more fun, through being "friendly, fun adn nice. to avoid stigma the children were told that they were acting as consultants, to the coach, who was trying to learn what kind of things make it more enjoyable to play a games.
the children were coached to act in ways Asher had found typical of more popular children. for example they were asked to thin alternative suggestion and compromise( rather than fighting ) if they disaggre about the rule: to remember to talk with and ask question about the other child to see how he is doing; to say something nice when the other person does well: to smile and offer help, suggestion and encouragement.the children also tried out these basic social amnesty while playing game such as , picking up the stick with a classmate, and were coached after ward on how well they did. this mini course in getting along head a remarkable effect: a year letter a children were coached all of whom were selected because they were least- like in the class were now solidly in the middle of classroom popularity, no one become the star of the class but none were rejected.
similar result have been founded by by Stephen Nowicky, an Emory university psychologist. his program trains social outcasts to hone their ability to read and respond appropriately to other`s children feelings. the children for example, are videotaped while practicing expression of feeling such as happiness and sadness, and are coached to improve their emotional expressiveness. they try our their newly honed skill with a child they want to make friend with.
both Nowicky and Asher had found some ways to encourage a rejected children. children with a passive tendency need to train and coached to socialize with other children. the hopeful sign is the many or most rejected children can be brought into the circle of friendship with some basic emotional hijacking.
